Our Work

In order to create a Gold Standard for domestic abuse policy, we have partnered with the internationally respected Professor Jane Monckton-Smith OBE and her colleagues at the Homicide Timeline.

Jane and her team, based at the University of Gloucester, have been conducting pioneering research into coercive control, stalking and domestic homicide for many years and she has recently been recognised with an OBE awarded for her services to Criminal Justice.

The findings of Professor Monckton-Smith’s 2018 ground-breaking study – the Homicide Timeline: the 8 stages – is a model used by police forces and agencies across the UK and Europe as they make risk assessments in cases of coercive control, domestic abuse and stalking.

Professor Monckton-Smith studied hundreds of cases (including that of Raneem Oudeh and Khaloa Saleem) of partner homicide to identify ways to spot increasing risk of harm and she identified an emerging pattern that could be broken down into eight separate stages.

A forensic criminologist, she reviews homicide cases for the Home Office, and advises police forces, review panels and legal professionals on complex and high-profile murders, which informs her teaching and supports student learning.

SecureLife Consultancy Limited has leveraged its partnership with Jane and her team to apply their globally renowned research, policy making and advisory services to the needs of UK businesses to create a truly Gold Standard for domestic abuse policy and practice – based upon the 8 stage timeline.

Are you aware of the 8-Step Timeline of Domestic Abuse & Homicides?

With an increase in domestic abuse homicides being reported across the globe, a light is being shed on a crime that in 'normal' times causes the death of 2 women a week in the UK. The 8 stage timeline describes the factors that typically precede domestic abuse homicides and how this relates to risk assessment and safety planning.
